With a quite weird name, the Pekingese is truly a unique dog to have. These dogs got their name from the place where they came from, Peking, in China, and have been usually been attributed to be favored and praised as pet for the Imperial Chinese dynasties a good 2000 years ago. The Pekingese were said to be favored pet because they closely resemble Chinese lions that most Chinese believe to be guardian spirits.

That being said, these dogs are very sensitive, highly affectionate dogs, but their good behavior is normally warranted for those who the dog sees it deserving Pekingese are usually independent, strong-willed dogs that demand constant attention and affection from their masters in order for them to reciprocate the same action. These dogs are also suspicious of strangers and would often bark and let the said trespassers know that their presence does not sit well with the dog. One way to remedy this behavior is by socializing one’s Pekingese or Pekingese puppy at a young age with other dogs and pets as well as other people; the said Pekingese or Pekingese puppy will then have a more tolerant and friendly nature to that of a Pekingese puppy that did not get the proper obedience and socializing training. Socializing one’s Pekingese puppy is also a prudent decision in part of the owners because it teaches the dog that it is not the pack leader, but its owner is; this mindset of the Pekingese is called Small Dog Syndrome it is when a dog takes it upon itself to establish dominance over its owners, imposing its will on unsuspecting and unskilled owners and asserting the role of the alpha male or top dog. For people who are not aware with this phenomenon, they would often be catering to their dog’s every whim and eventually this pampering will be internalized by their dog that the humans are not his master, but the other way around. Hence it is vital that the human owners establish from the onset that they are indeed the masters.

A dog’s demeanor reflects that of its owner if one’s Pekingese is a bit imposing, chances are when it was a Pekingese puppy it was pampered too much. Balance must be kept in terms of showing affection as well as taking care of one’s dog so that their relationship is clear for both parties.
