Pekingese dogs are the ancient pet dogs of the royalties in the Chinese Empire. During the ancient empire days, stealing Pekingese dogs is a sin sanctioned to death. Only the members of the Chinese Imperial Palace have the capacity to own Pekingese puppies.
The spread of the Pekingese dogs throughout the neighboring countries were only made possible after the fall of the Chinese Empire. It was in 1860s when British and French troops combine together to turn down the Chinese Imperial palace. They succeeded and before they burn the palace into the ground, they took the Pekingese dogs seen mourning over the body of one member of the empire who died after suicide.
The eventual fall of the Chinese Empire is the start of the spread of the Pekingese dogs throughout Europe and later on, in its neighboring continent, America. Prominent people gave their acquired Pekingese puppies from China to their relatives. Lord John Hay gave a pair of the dog to his sister; Sir George Fitzroy gave a pair of dog to his cousins; and Lieutenant Dunne gave it to Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. It was later on introduced to several Americans and one of this is the daughter of Theodore Roosevelt. There were also trade of the Pekingese puppies in Ireland and the spread of the breed subsist.
The American Kennel Club recognized the Pekingese dogs in 1906 and categorized it under the toy group.
The Pekingese breed of dog has stayed through years and still subsisting. Their appearance has also not changed at all. The Pekingese puppies have flat face and long-haired type of coat that requires hourly brushing every week. This is one of the reasons why people love them so dearly. Their body is compact and muscular. It stands lowly on the ground and only stands about 6 to 9 inches and weighs from 7 to 14 pounds. Different from the other dog breeds, AKC allowed any color for a Pekingese puppies and even color combinations as the owner so desires. Smaller Pekingese puppies are referred to as Sleeves, associating to the ancient time when small Pekingese puppies can be put into the sleeves of the royalties.
An ideal Pekinese dog is intelligent and affectionate family dog. They are inactive and would enjoy staying indoors. Pekingese puppies also want to ramp at the park to flaunt because they are attention seeker and think that they are high-valued. They are playful and has an attitude to posses. Pekingese puppies will not like to share what it has and this will often result in conflict to child of tender years who knew nothing about dogs boundaries.
Pekingese dogs have a medium life span of 11 years and may extend depending on the home care of the owner. They are generally healthy and the reason of their eventual death is trauma or heart ailment. It is highly recommended for the Pekingese dog owners to consult a veterinarian to ensure the health and safety of the dog.
